Randal Brown, P.Eng., P.E., FSFPE will be awarded the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) Harold E. Nelson Service Award at its Annual Awards Luncheon on October 15, 2012 in Savannah, Georgia. The SFPE Board of Directors established the Nelson Award in 1987 to recognize dedicated and inspired service toward the ideals and goals of the Society. The award is named after Harold E. "Bud" Nelson, P.E., FSFPE, whose parallel fire protection engineering and Society careers are truly worthy of emulation. Brown will received this award for his significant contributions to several of SFPE's committees. He was a key contributor to SFPE's first standard, The SFPE Engineering Standard to Predicting Fire Exposures to Structures. He is also an active member of the standards-making committee on predicting the thermal response of structures. More recently, he has assumed the chairmanship of SFPE's Membership Committee, where he is working towards increasing SFPE's membership.

It is with deep sadness that I advise you of the death of Bob Kearney, a Past-President of the SFPE NCR chapter and a former colleague of mine in the Dominion Fire Commissioner’s (DFC) Office. Bob was Head of Fire Inspections and the Chief Policy Advisor with the DFC. He was named Vice-President of the SFPE NCR chapter when it was founded and he succeeded Ken Richardson as President in 1984-1986. Before Bob retired from government in the 1990’s, he worked at NRC with the Canadian Codes Centre, and he served the fire protection community for a few more years as Secretary-Treasurer to the Council of Canadian Fire Marshals & Fire Commissioners before his full retirement. The SFPE NCR Chapter has sent a floral bouquet to the family in honour of his service to the Chapter and to the fire protection community.
